The Case of Kaya is the Application Assignment
The application assignment in Week 6 presents the case of Kaya, an elementary school child who sometimes exhibits the troublesome behaviors of being off-task and being verbally or even physically aggressive. You are expected to treat Kaya’s case as if you are her school counselor. Wearing a school counselors’ which means you must develop a hyper-awareness of the concerns of having a child who is aggressive to others in the school setting: you cannot ethically exposure other children to this danger, so you must quickly find a way to extinguish Kaya’s aggressive behaviors. You are provided data on Kay’s behaviors in specific settings and you are to use a time series design to respond to the research question, “What impact does a designed intervention have in reducing off-task behavior, physical aggression, and verbal aggression for the Kaya?”
You propose an intervention aimed at reducing Kaya’s undesirable behaviors. Since it is unethical to provide treatments that lack research based evidence, you must justify the selected intervention with references to the research literature. You need to address all aspects of the intervention, for example (a) what do you expect from the intervention (b) who will be involved in this intervention, that is, who will do the actual implementing, (c) what will be the duration of the intervention, and (d) what data collection (measurements) will occur—how often will that data collection occur and who will be responsible for collecting the data (taking the measurements)?
You are developing a proposal for the time series and therefore are expected to use the data presented. You will not need to create any data or pretend like the intervention has been completed. You will graph the pre-intervention data provided in the case study demonstrating you know how to graph the multiple data sets on one graph. A main form of analysis of time series designs is a visual comparison of the data on a graph; therefore, you must be able to plot the data on one graph. Be sure to pay close attention to APA rules about where to place your graph in your paper.
The other pitfall is failing to think through and report all aspect of the time series study. Remember, a good research study should be replicable, that is, other researchers should be able to read your time series study proposal of Kaya’s case and know exactly how to implement the study. One of the best ways of precluding skipping pieces in reporting your time series study, is to use the essential pieces and parts of research to report Kaya’ s case study.

As with the application assignment, the key to success is to carefully think through and provide the details for each of the essential pieces and parts of a research study. Again, you want your proposed study to be replicable by other researchers.
Time series designs are seen less frequently in the professional literature of research studies than experimental, survey research, or even qualitative designs. That may be due to time series designs usually having limited generalizability or to editorial prejudice. However, time series designs are quite useful when counselors want to document evidence of the effectiveness of an intervention or therapeutic approach with an individual or a small number of individuals.
