Passage 1:

Teresa and Luiz have had to travel to Dubai to take up jobs and send remittances back home to take care of their children that live with their aunty in the Philippines. The parent’s only way to keep contact with their children is through video calls on Facebook. Teresa is shocked when she learns that her older daughter who lives in the Philippines has changed her status to read, “in a relationship”. Teresa feels like she is missing the growth of her children.

Passage 2:

Dubai is portrayed as a country that exploits human resources from other parts of the world for her own gain. The author narrates how Dubai regards foreign workers. In this regard, the author points out that only one of ten people in Dubai are a real Emirati; Dubai is not open to the idea of granting citizenship rights to any foreigners. Additionally, the living and working conditions that the foreigners are exposed to are not above board.

The Unusual features

The author uses descriptions to paint the picture of what the article is taking about. For example, in the second passage, the author gives a listing of the white people that work in Dubai and goes ahead to remind the readers that the whites are also remittance workers. The author also uses direct speech in the article to bring a personal feel and incorporate the immigrant’s point of view.

Being a resident of the 21st Century America affected my reading of this text in one major way. Prior to reading this text, I was ignorant of the plights and emotional stress that remittance workers undergo in foreign countries. Previously, I was of the opinion that the Americas and Europe had the largest numbers of foreign workers. This thought has since been changed by the article that shows the U.A.E. as the leader in foreign workers population.

Critical questions:

  1. Why does U.E.A. deny citizenship to its foreign workers?
  2. Is working in the U.A.E. worth it?

The intended audience/readers of this article are the wannabe migrants. Layout of the story is intended to present the intended audience with real life account of the life in Dubai.
