8.1       Assessment modes, weightings and submission dates

Module assessment comprises of three parts:  one piece of coursework, one group presentation (covered below), and an examination.  You are required to submit one 2,500 word essay from a choice of four questions below:

 

  • Critically evaluate the impact and effectiveness of strategic HRM in facilitating competitive advantage.

 

  • Critically analyse the appropriateness of performance management or reward systems and establish to what extent these strategies incentivise employees in the workplace.

 

  • Discuss the structure and function of the employment relationship. To what extent are relations between the employer and employee antagonistic?

 

  • Define the key components of High Performance Work Practices (HPWP) and critically examine to what extent the high performance approach increases work intensification.

 

This assignment carries a 30% weighting of the total module mark.

 

 

All written coursework should be anonymous. Please DO NOT put your name on your coursework, only your student number is required. Your student number can be found on your student campus card. Please double check your student number is written correctly before submitting your work.

 

The word count for this piece of work is: 2,500 words

Students must include their word count on the coursework coversheet when they submit their work.

 

Word limits for written assignments are to include: footnotes and endnotes (irrespective of whether they have been used for the purpose of referencing or not), references (in the main text), tables and illustrations, and if applicable the abstract, title page and contents page.

 

Any appendicised material and the bibliography or reference list should be excluded from the word count.

 

Penalties for exceeding the word limit:

Up to 10% over word limit No Penalty
10% or more over the word limit Deduction of 10 marks off original mark
Failure to provide an electronic copy when requested Mark capped to the pass mark
Intentional misrepresentation of the word count on the coversheet Mark capped to the pass mark
NOTE:

  1. When the original mark is within 10 marks of the pass mark, the penalty will be capped at the pass mark
  1. Original marks below the pass mark will not be penalized
