P144C: Personality:Criteria for the Final Paper
The final paper for this course will involve the analysis of the personality of a
designated film character. Your paper should have two distinct sections entitled
“Part One” and “Part Two.” Each section should include the following:
Part One: (35 points)
Select one of the personality theories that has been covered in class, and apply it to
the designated film character.
• Clearly identify the chosen theory, and give the reasons why you chose it. (3
points).
• Periphery: Define what peripheral personality type best fits the designated
film character’s pattern of thoughts, feelings, and actions. Make sure to use
specific examples throughout your entire discussion of the periphery. If
there appears to be a change in the peripheral personality type, identify that.
(17 points).
• Development: How does the theory’s view on development help explain how
the designated film character developed the identified peripheral personality
type. In supporting your hypotheses, make sure to include what ever relevant
evidence there is from the character’s past and present life. (10 points).
• Core: Include the core as a finishing touch to your description of the
designated mm character, but do not make it the main focus. Remember, the
periphery is what makes the character different from other people, whereas
the core asks what the character has in common with others. (5 points).
Part Two: (10 points)
Analyze how useful the theory you selected was in explaining and understanding the
designated film character’s personality. In doing this, decide which of the two
following evaluative stances you wish to take, and pursue it.
• Detail the important aspects of the designated character’s thoughts, feelings,
and actions, or the change in them, that the theory does not do well in
explaining. (10 points, if selected).
• Detail how the theory does a great job in explaining the designated film
character’s personality, and why. (10 points, if selected).
Additional Criteria: (5 points)
• The paper is well organized and flows logically from one paragraph to the
next.
• Ideas are clearly expressed, and relevant examples are used.
