The Gulf War
The United States military faced enormous challenges during the gulf war. The challenges mainly occurred because of the proximity of the Middle East from the United States. The long distance between the two regions created a logistical nightmare for the United States’ forces.
One of the logistical problems faced by United States military was getting enough supplies of spare parts (Lowry, 2003). During the war, equipment required regular repair for efficiency. It was difficult to deliver the required parts in a timely manner, without affecting the mission tactical planning.
The second logistical challenge that faced the American troops was the supply of food and clothing. The frequent movement of troop made it hard to supply fresh food. Food and clothing that provided camouflage in the desert were crucial to the troops’ operations. Fresh food was required to provide the required energy for the fighting forces. When the uniform supplies were available, there was a problem of ensuring the soldiers got the right size of uniforms and boots.
The United States military and its allies overcame most of these challenges through a variety of ways. First, the troops obtained spare parts from other units to meet their shortfall. In addition, the soldiers rebuilt and reused some of their equipment, purchased parts from the locals and took parts from non-mission equipment.
To overcome the challenge of food, the military obtained fresh supplies from the local economy and fed some of the soldiers. The soldiers who did not move frequently had more fresh supplies than those in constant movement. However, the military boosted the morale of those soldiers in constant movement by improvising automobiles that supplied the soldiers with hot dogs, French fries and hamburgers.
