Humanities Today

Introduction

The term humanities can be defined as the academic subjects that deal with the conditions of human beings using approaches that are analytical, critical or speculative in nature as differentiated from the major empirical methods of the natural sciences. According to Blazek (2009), the term humanity has changed over time. Previously, humanities were used in differentiating between areas of study that consist of humans over those that pertained to God. For instance, humanities include traditional and modern languages, literature, history, religion, philosophy. It also involves performing and visual arts inclusive of music and theatre. In some cases, humanities are also regarded in terms of social sciences and it includes disciplines such as anthropology, communication studies and technology. Through these humanities, the learners are enabled to examine a large variety of development in terms of ideas and forms of expression that put a lot of influence in the modern world. Humanities are very important in the life of a person through developing transferable skills that could lead to the ability to critically read and write in a clear form. Such skills are always vital to managers, doctors, and the journalist especially when it comes to communicating with the clients.

Differences between humanities and other modes of human inquiry and expression

Humanity is known to be the study concerning the human condition. The study may involve art, sociology, anthropology, literature, or any other human aspects. However, the other modes of human inquiry involve studying non-human disciplines. These non-human subjects may include natural sciences and mathematics. Currently, the sciences have been noted to be separate and divided into two parts, which include social science and natural sciences. Therefore, humanity tries to differentiate itself from the current sciences through a non-scientific method where the scientific mode of inquiry’s goal is to develop valid theories. The main difference between humanity and other modes of human inquiry and expression is that the other modes have nothing to do with human creative aspects. Humanities are useful because they assist people from different cultures and societies to realize, understand, and communicate the previous similarities and the current differences. Other modes of human inquiry and expression such as science become only important to people’s lives because of the conception of ends and purpose that does not come from science. Another difference in humanity and other modes includes its self-understanding and the expression it holds. The social sciences are mainly based on the regularities in social life (Jose, 2002). For instance, this is seen at the time when social life attacks an individual, who is actively creating and maintaining it as something that is natural.

Current example of humanities and how they reflect current developments in politics, socioeconomics, and technology

Currently, art has been explored into distinct areas. For instance, technology has been employed in art studios and a good number of museums are trying to keep up with the high competition of technology development. Music on the other hand is also experiencing various challenges of technology. The use of traditional instruments has reduced greatly; thus, majority of music artists and their producers are encountering harsh challenges of piracy because of the freedom and easy access to the internet, which allows free downloading of music. The same challenge of technology development is being experienced by the editors of literature. This is because literature focuses on arts and any other subject that are readily available on the internet free of charge.

In today’s society, people engage in artwork, literature and music as a way of fulfilling or meeting the socio-economic needs. Through music production, different groups of people from different cultures come together to socialize and in a way improve the economy of the society. Poetry, drama, and exposition are currently used in conveying any new philosophical principles. On the other hand, architecture has been employed as a form of expressing people’s thoughts concerning an issue.

Conclusion

Humanities are the collection of a large set of academic disciplines inclusive of classics, languages, law, history, arts, literature philosophy and religion among others. However, other disciplines such as anthropology and linguistic are taken to be a part of both the humanities and the sciences. Previously, studies not focusing on God have been taken to be part of the humanities. This implies therefore, that early mathematics and science disciplines were part of the humanities. There have been some differences that have been noted between the humanities and other modes of human inquiry and expression just as discussed above. However, the use of these humanities issues such as politics, socioeconomic and technology are reflected. Humanities are useful because they assist people from different cultures and societies to realize, understand, and communicate the previous similarities and the current differences. Other modes of human inquiry and expression such as science become important to people’s lives because of the conception of ends and purpose that does not come from science. Therefore, it is important that people take enough consideration in these disciplines that is both in humanities and in those other modes of human inquiry and expression.
