What makes something a poem

What makes something a poem?

A poem is a verbal composition designed to express thoughts, dreams, and emotions in an imaginary way by use of methods like rhymes and metaphors. It is a way for one to express him or her self. There are no hard and fast rules in defining written works. A poem may also be defined by having something to say. It is the element of a statement being made or asserted. It can be about anything, but it must have an element of declarative nature.

Michael Meyers

In Michael Meyers, the poet is explaining how Michael Meyers writes poems using images that are scary for example, on the seventh line he uses imaginary thoughts of a person being stabbed; this portrays an image filled with blood. Poetry is putting words together to take the reader to another time and place. It is the art of saying a lot without using many words.

For a person to understand poetry one has to read it carefully and pay attention. Poems are known to have different interpretations the ambiguity maybe be because the poem means more, less than ordinary speech can communicate. In the poem Michael Meyers by Charles Black, he is communicating the writing skills of poem writing ghost like imitations and death. Here he is showing the expertise in which Michael Meyers is able to write poems. This scares a reader. Good poetry arouses one’s senses and stimulates their imagination but not all good poetry is written by profound writers. A good poem has to put its point across and arouse different emotions and feelings in the reader. A poem must be honest and true to the writer and not just airy and aimless thoughts. It is supposed to give the reader something to think about and not cause them to do harmful things.

It creates an imaginative space at the level of its content or deviational use of language for example the poet DC has, used very strong words to describe where he was born in the last line of his poem. A poem attempts to say the most while saying the least and a reader can recognize this unique art form when reading certain passages by different authors. Most of us recognize poetry when it is fed to us in stanza form, when it rhymes, when we recognize similes and metaphors but some poems are created without such devices. For instance, in Mike Meyers Mind Set, the poet has tried to put the poem like a rap song showing how his mind is in harmony with that of Mike Meyers and in his case, he has not used rhymes in his poem. Poetry is using words to draw a picture in the readers mind and they do not need to rhyme in order to be poems. Sometimes poetry can be described as the impulsive flood of feelings.

Accusation

A poem is the spirit of humanity reaching out to others through well-placed words or phrases. It is a form of expression where the poet uses literary techniques, which can effectively express a message that can be interpreted differently by various readers. In the poem, Accusation by Sebastian Hayes, the poet is making us feel guilty of having a good life while others are living in misery. He is blaming both the dead and living. Similes, metaphors, and rhyme are useful, but none of them individually makes up a poem. They might sound poetic, but that is not the same thing. Whatever one uses to make a poem will mean nothing unless it feels right to the poet. Most poets talk about things that interest or excite them. A poem does not need to have a fancy word nor does it need to sound fancy. This is because most poets write as though they are having a monologue.

Excerpt from Songs of Solomon

A poem can either inspire or depress the reader. In the poem from book of Songs of Solomon 8:6-7, the poet is advising on marriage when he compares love to death he is trying to extol the virtues of love between a husband and his wife. The poem is showing how God intended marriage to be and not to end through divorce but until death. Some poems can lift a reader’s spirits while some will not. Poems can be written by anyone and can be read anywhere, anytime. A poem has the ability to make statements and to forge connections, behind these particular elements are of vital importance in helping to construct the elements of the poem. There are different kinds of poems. Poems can narrate a story, describe a scene, develop a theme, share an insight, express an emotion or ask a question. A poem evokes a striking image by investment of feelings and through profound observation.

One may read a poem and feel cold. A poem can make a person laugh, cry or yawn. Poems mean different things to different people. Some are spiritual like the Songs of Solomon poem. The poem explains how God intended marriage to be. Husbands and wives in this poem are expected to live a happy married life. A poem is like a painted art whereby the writer uses words instead of paint. Poetry is suggestive it suggests to the reader a certain emotion for example joy, sorrow, anger and love. It can make the reader surprised; it can be revealing, insightful and make the reader understand the truth or the beauty of something. In the poem Accusation the poet is showing insights of life, we cannot help when people are miserable with their life yet sometimes we feel guilty because we are enjoying ours. The poem reveals to the rituals people perform for the dead. This poem evokes some guilt in the reader’s minds for both the dead people and the people living in misery.
