Regulatory Issues in CAM

Regulatory Issues in CAM

CAM practices are groped into different categories. This paper covers the rationale for alternative or new regulatory process under each domain.

  1. Manipulative and Body based: Massage – it involves manipulating body muscles and other body tissues. However it must be regulated in people with open wounds and those who have undergone surgery, those who have a problem in blood clotting. For pregnant mothers, it should only be done by those certified to such (Wong, 2007).
  2. Mind body: Yoga – it uses various practices like breathing, different body postures, meditation and relaxation. It has not been discovered yet how it influences health but it is believed that it helps relieve stress. It should however not be used by people who experience diseases like disc disease of the e spine, those who have blood pressure, either high or low and problems in blood clotting. Pregnant women should also avoid some poses and they should practice yoga under the instruction of a qualified and certified instructor. Those thinking of using yoga should first consult a health care provider if they are experiencing any medical condition. It should not be used in place of conventional medicine and let the provider know of any other practice that you use in health management so that they are in a position to choose the type of yoga compatible with you (National Institutes of Health, 2007).
  • Whole medicinal system; Naturopathy – it uses several methods of healing, both traditional and modern. It put emphasis on the healing power of nature. Due to the intricate approaches used in this process, it has been quite difficult to study them so there is little scientific evidence concerning their effect. However, it is advised that naturopathy is not be used in place of conventional treatment as it may prove harmful. Keep away from conventional medicine and option for naturopathy in some cases like severe injury might have dire consequences. Some of the approaches and idea help by these practitioners are not in line with conventional medicine since they have no scientific proof to support their safety. Also, some of the therapies may be harmful of not taken or used under advice of a qualified practitioner e.g. some herbs may have adverse side effects or may react with other medicines and cause harmful effects.
  1. Natural products; vitamins – they act as dietary supplements. One must have full information about it before use. They may react with other medicine or other supplements and at time may contain some elements not on the label.
  2. Movement; Alexander technique – here, one is observed what they do with their body to try and find out what might be causing the symptoms they are experiencing. One is then directed on how body movement to improve the support system. There is no force used on the tissue hence damage to tissues is minimal or unlikely. It is however not applicable to stroke patients (National Institute of Health, 2007).
