Wine and War

Wine and War

The paper is a report on the book Wine and War by Don and Petie Kladstrup and the lessons learnt from the book that relate to the grape and wine industry.  The book is dramatic, informative and historical and relates the Frenchmen and the value awarded to wine. They consider wine a treasure worth fighting for as it occurred in World War II. In nineteen forty during invasion of France from the Nazis and later the Germans, they tried to mess up with the French’s treasure while taking procession of their wine plants and ordering for a higher production. The German soldiers seized best wine in order to acquire high profits from it. The French tried to repel the Germans by failing by all means possible to participate in production of wine and to fool the Germans who in turn reacted and even killed and imprisoned them resulting into war over wine a. Some siphoned wine barrels, participated in ship sabotaged, hid wine in wine caves or added other ingredients such as water into the wine. Others hid wine in weird places such hidden cellars while put their lives to risk just to protect their culture and to some extent their economy.  The story reflects the spirit of unity, bravery and witty tactics employed by the French to safeguard wine. The spirit of togetherness and enthusiasm that Frenchmen exhibited is reflected in the quality and gaiety of their wine.

Wine and war is relevant in that it exhibits a spirit of unity and emphasizes the significance of wine in French history. Wine for instance was a main aspect behind military invasions and how it was used to quench the parties engaged in war e.g. during the First World War. In addition, wine acted as an economic resource for the French and its being undertaken by the Germans meant slowdown of the country’s economy and that of the farmers in the grape fields. Another lesson learnt is the enthusiasm and resourcefulness of the Frenchmen and winemakers to conceal best wines, participated to retain the wine in the country and even risked their lives not to expose the secret ingredients. This is an expression of self sacrifice and determination for the sake of the entire nation hence their heroism.

It is from the book that it is clear that Adolf Hitler disliked wine and after the Nazis attacked the French’s wine industry, some of the Germans helped in retaining the vineyards and requisition of wine back in France. Wine and War enlightens from a historical perspective on the efforts that French had to invest in order to save their valuable. It exposes a rather small account behind the wine industry while relating it to the occurrences of the Second World War which would probably remain unknown. This  not only contributes to offering high regard to French wine but also to evaluate its relevance to the French people where blood was even spilled for its sake which remains a tribute. The painful past of wine and its evolution to the present states is the key for the wine manufacturers in France to lead by example and maintain the best quality wine which begins even from the vineyards. Therefore, the French’s wine quality should not be compromised but should remain a treasure worth fighting for.
