I need a 7 page research paper that needs to have at least 7 MLA cited sources at the end of it. This paper will be about an interactive mass media display. Below I will paste all of the instructions for this paper.
Imagine that you had to put together a small display of mass media items for people to look at and interact with, but you had a limited $5,000 budget to work with. You have to include some items that are from the print media and some items that are from the electronic media. All the items you choose must have historical significance.
Your assignment is to plan out such an interactive mass media display with seven items in it, one from each of the seven categories of mass media (books, magazines, newspapers, radio, film, tv, and computers/internet). What I mean by an interactive is that people would not only get to see the items on display, but actually use them. For example, if you chose a phonograph from the early-1900s, people could come in and not only look at the phonograph, but also use it.
The items you choose should be from the past, not the present. If the typical college student has used or is currently using a mass media item in their home, then it probably doesn’t belong in the display. That means you would not include a Harry Potter book, an IPod, or a flat screen TV in your display. While all of these items may someday prove to be an important part of mass media history, it is simply too early to know. Plus, the display is meant to educate people about mass media history.
All of the items chosen should have historical importance for the mass medium itself. It is important not to confuse the message with the medium. Choosing a local newspaper, such as the Nov. 23, 1963 Rochester Post Bulletin (the medium), to display because it had a story of the JFK assassination (the message) on the cover would not be a good choice. While the JFK assassination was an important part of the American history, the newspaper is not. After all, every paper in the country had that story on its cover. A better choice would be to pick a newspaper that had historical importance (perhaps one of the first newspapers from the Penny Press days).
1. Identify seven (7) mass media items that ought to be in the display. You must select one item from each of the seven categories of mass media listed below. Do not pick newer or modern items. Focus on the past and be sure that each item you choose is historically significant as a mass medium.
o Books
o Magazines
o Newspapers
o Radio/Music/Recording Industry
o Motion Pictures (Film)
o Television
o Computers/Internet/Video Games
You need to be as specific as possible in your identification of these seven items. For example, don’t say “a record player” or “one of the earliest newspapers”. That is too general. Be specific about what type/brand/model of record player or newspaper and from what era (dates). In order to do this, you will have to do some research.
2. For each of the seven items chosen, give a 1-2 paragraph justification for why you chose it. Again, you will have to do some research. Focus your justification on the significance each item has in mass media history. You should also keep in mind your budget. While it might be great to include an Edison Phonograph from the 1880s, if you find it costs $3,700, then you might not choose it because it would take up too much of your total budget.
3. Next, indicate the availability (Where can you buy it?) and affordability (What does it cost?) of each of the seven items. Once again, this means you will have to do some research. You might find some prices for these items on EBay or some other internet auction site, but don’t limit yourself to this resource. You cannot simply find all of your prices on EBay. You must use some other sources. You can do this part of the assignment in paragraph form or using some type of table that lists each of the seven items, the cost(s) of each items, and the location(s) each item can be purchased. The total cost of all seven items should be presented as a total at the end of this part of the assignment and should be $5,000 or less. Try to use as much of your budget as possible. This will ensure that you get the best items for your display.
4. Since you are required to do research for this assignment, you should provide evidence that you have done some. You will need to include a bibliography with this paper, and it must include a minimum of seven sources. Shopping sites, such as Ebay or Amazon, do NOT count as one of these seven sources. List only the sources you used to conduct research about the mass media items. You will also need to include in-text/parenthetical citations of your sources within the paper. Use MLA or APA style. Do NOT take any of your information from Wikipedia, as there are serious questions about the validity of some of the information on this site due to the way it is compiled and reviewed.
this is what this assignment will be graded on using the following rubric:
Seven mass media items were identified, one from each of the seven categories. Specifics regarding type/brand/model and era (dates) were provided.
A detailed justification was provided for including each of these seven items in the display. Each item was a significant piece of mass media history.
Information about the availability and affordability of these seven items was provided.
Adequate research was conducted. A bibliography, with a minimum of seven sources (do NOT include shopping sites), and in-text/parenthetical citations of sources are used. Proper use of MLA or APA style.
Proper mechanics used. This includes formatting, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar.
