CHAPTERS 6-9
You are in charge of a diverse group of individuals—The following is a brief synopsis of your staff:
Jim: Jim has been with the company 25+ years. Jim is a very dedicated employee and is extremely conscientious in every detail of the work he performs. Jim’s wife is seriously ill which requires Jim to take time-off. Up to this point in time, Jim has always been anxious to attend training, now that his wife is seriously ill—he is considering early retirement next year at age 62. Jim is African American.
Jan: Jan has been with the company for approximately five years. Jan has just completed her Masters’ degree and is anxious to “take over” the management of the group. Jan has been moved to several different areas within the company due to personal conflicts. Jan has made it perfectly clear that she has a Masters’ degree and there is nothing they can teach her at this time. Jan is a 36 year old Hispanic single-mother and has been quick to let everyone know that she is from a family that is racist.
Ian: Ian has just been assigned to your group. Ian has just returned from an overseas assignment and has been totally in charge of the office in Saudi Arabia. Ian’s return was prior to the company’s plans due to his wife experiencing serious problems with her pregnancy. Ian is currently experiencing “repatriation woes”. Ian is a 35 year old married father of three. Ian and his wife were born in Saudi Arabia.
Sue: Sue has worked for the company for over 10 years. She has been an integral member of your group. Sue has taken many personal self initiatives to improve herself and has requested a one-on-one appointment to discuss her personal career development and actions she can take to move forward in the company. Sue has unfortunately been stifled due to senior managements’ opinion that females are excellent support personnel, but men belong in senior management positions. Sue is Caucasian and 36, she has just divorced and has told no one that she has completed all requirements for her Doctoral degree except to write her thesis.
Michael: Michael has been assigned to your group for only two weeks. Michael is extremely intelligent but has physical disabilities. Michael is extremely proficient in computer technology and research. Due to his physical disabilities, he has requested consideration of an alternative work arrangement. Michael is 21 and is just now returning to work after a serious car accident which will require him to be confined to a wheel chair. Michael’s parents were killed in the car accident.
