This article in the San Jose Mercury News features an article about Silvia Montano and her family—one of our McKinley moms and Campinas leaders! It gives us the perfect set-up for this homework assignment.
Step 1:
Think about our lesson on assessment and look at this article with a critical eye in terms of how the author is addressing someone in a community that is not their own. Is the reporter being sensitive, educational and informative or is’ it sensationalistic and expletive?
Step 2:
Print and read the short article one the content page (Neighborhood Computes)
Be sure to read the entire article and look at the associated photos.
Step 3:
Review the article from the perspective of the principles and conceptual tools of community health promotion, and the things you have been learning/experiencing this semester. Pretend that you are the reporter’s editor and he has given you this draft to review before it goes live.
Mark up the article with pen and highlighter to identify the following:
• Things the author does well (from our perspective)
• Places where the author is violating key principles or values of community health promotion things he needs to change
Step 4:
Write a review of the article, as if you are writing to the reporter. Go over each strength and ten each concern, identifying the place in the article and backing it up with the principle or conceptual tool he is either using (even if he doesn’t know it ) or violating—and the consequences of each choice. You can use any format you like: detailed memo to him, detailed table of strengths and concerns (as long as you include all the text you need)
Guidelines for this review:
• Your review must be specific – quote text or specific photos (both positive and of concern)
• Your review must organized clearly – strong points and things that need changing
• For each point, both strong and of concern, be sure to reference a particular community health promotion tool or principle.
• Identify at least 5 strengths and at least 5 things the reporter should change.
• Staple your marked up version
