Notes from my Chairman: Please put all corrections in RED so we know the corrections. I made a few, I need a professional to now edit and add what I missed. I am not sure how many pages you will actually write but I don’t think you will be writing more than 2000 words.
* Please update Table of Context and Reference pages AFTER edits are made.
*Realize that there is no such thing as pure research; it’s ok to identify what your biases are.
*Refer to Bailey-Jackson’s work when addressing micro based inquiry e.g. Racial identity.
*Add the degree to which H S I or historical Spanish Serving institutions add to the PWI’s. Ground this with the racial identity studies with Hispanic student to attend.
*How do you justify dividing California into two states. (Northern vs. Southern) Look at researcher (couldn’t recall author?). You may use his research in your study.
*Focus on adult learning theory. Tacit and explicit knowledge. Tacit is that knowledge that personal knowledge that you get.
*In looking at your sample, just say that “this is a convenient sample.”
*Appreciative Inquiry: Not a bad thing to say up front that you want or expect good news from your findings. You should consider using work by Cooper-Ridder.
*Look further at “Positive Organization Psychology”. This could help strengthen your point without causing finger-pointing.
*Consider using Feminist Research Methodology in your grounded theory. Use it to the degree; build a theory based on what they (subjects) say.
**You must revise the undergraduate and graduate experience in your document. Add comparative undergraduate experiences. Try to compare without being confrontational
*INSTRUMENTATION section is missing. Should be fully described. Must show how it’s aligned with your research questions.
*You must ask how their undergraduate experiences compare for career, graduate school. Ask why did you choose a PWI?
*You must LIMIT, SIMPLIFY, and FOCUS!
*Presently, Research Questions are all over the place; do a cleaner version of what you are already doing.
*Choose a much larger sample of interviewees; 44 total. Look at Debra Plummer’s work.
*An explanation “why California” in chapter one.
*PWI should come up in the problem and not wait until chapters 2 and 3.
*The fact that your subjects in this research are Black is integral; state so.
*Chapter 3 is missing Instrumentation and human subject consideration.
*Consider mixed methods for your qualitative portion: student engagement survey SES, OIE. There are studies that address two of your 3 research questions. There are questions about peers, higher education services.
*In Methodology section, may be good to do both online survey and interviews.
*You should limit your sample/age group to one that is most applicable to you; 22-40; generation X? Explain why
*Methodology needs to be clear and solid.
*The methodology needs to read like a recipe;
*It is important that you have a personal network of potential subjects, within the sample you may be to extract from the list, extract specific groups, etc.
*Must have a protected file; appropriately destroy data after maximum of 5 years
*Back in chapter 2 there was nothing about Career Preparation.
