Choose five of the six essay questions to respond to in order to complete the exam.
1. Choose a current event that has recently made national headlines. Using the social psychology perspectives covered so far in the course (or your own developing theory), explain why you believe the event occurred. What were the driving social influences behind it?
2. Do you believe that there are people who are truly altruistic in helping others, or does everyone have an ulterior motive? Explain your answer using a social psychology perspective.
3. Using yourself as an example, explain how your self-esteem was fostered in childhood and whether or not it has improved as you have entered adulthood. Would you personally use a self-esteem improvement program? Why or why not?
4. Your car just broke down and cannot be repaired. You need another vehicle. How comfortable would you be trusting the automobile salesperson based on what you know about human persuasion? Do you believe you could tell if you were being lied to about a car’s value? How accurate do you believe your social perception skills are when it comes to observing others?
5. Earlier in the course, the Milgram experiment was covered. Do you believe that power can corrupt even the best-intentioned people? What are some safeguards that people in positions of power could use in order to keep themselves in check?
6. You are a human resource executive in charge of hiring new employees. Your company is in pharmaceutical sales. You have interviewed several people for a position. One person is very attractive and seems to have a sketchy resume and did not interview well, the second interviewee is middle-aged who has experience but seemed rather bland in the interview despite answering all the questions well. The last person interviewed was funny and engaging, had a solid resume, and did a little better than the attractive person in the interview. Which one do you believe you would hire (think about the halo effect)? Why do you believe the choice you made is the best one for your company?
