Part One: Discuss the historical context for understanding the various European interpretations of Native Americans as seen in chapter 1.

There will be discussion boards set up on Canvas each having a question or set of questions to which every student is expected to give a response. There will be a three-day period to read the assigned materials, make an initial response (150-200 words) to the prompt, and then for full credit comment (50-100 words each) on at least two other classmates’ statements. Read everyone else’s responses before you make further comments. Feel free to disagree, but the comments should be polite and offer some explanation as to why you approve or disapprove. Approach this more as a discussion, a group brain-storming, rather than a debate. Obviously good discussion will earn a better grade in the course, but it is also to encourage the student to think about a particular topic from different perspectives so that he/she can write solid essays that will be more formally graded.
