Pick two Serial Killers and make a presentation about them.
Create your presentation based on the person you have selected. No two
presentations will be alike, but consider the following items to create
your presentation. It is not necessary to answer every question, but the
key is to convey to a person (who knows nothing about this person) the
key attributes, characteristics, victims, and motivation of this person.
Identify the person clearly by name and clearly identify important
dates and places. Provide at least 2 solid paragraphs (or as much
as you can) about the person’s background (early life, parent
situation, problems, school issues, early warning signs, etc).
Elaborate as well as you can on the “exploits” of this person.
Identify facts; number of victims, types of victims, etc. This will be
different for each criminal – if there are less than 5 victims, be as
detailed as possible, if there are a lot, try to identify patterns to
keep it manageable.
Identify which “typology” of murderer this person is (pg 10-13
chapter 1). Use specific details about the person and specific
words from the text to identify the type and elaborate (For example,
Westley Dodd is mentioned in chapter 1 but it only says he killed
three young boys; how does this qualify as “sadistic?”)
Also identify the proper typology from either chapter 2 or 3
depending upon the gender of your person (visionary, hedonistic,
etc), again using specific details about them/their exploits and
words from the text.

Use the motivational factors in chapter 2 to assess your person’s
motivations. Using specific details of their exploits, identify “why
they did it.”
In the spirit of the assignment and advancing your knowledge,
select an individual you know little to nothing about.
There is no official (or even recommended) length for your presentation.
Each will be unique. Use your best judgment of “thorough” and which
information is the most important based on the individual you selected.
Strive for a “well developed” presentation, which means that any
terms are defined, any ideas are justified, and examples are included.
Specific examples from the person’s exploits and clear writing are very
important!
3) Post your presentation to the “Assignments” Forum and “Module #1” in
the Discussion Board.
4) Read other student presentations and ask questions. It is expected that
students devote a substantial amount of time to reading other
presentations, and asking thoughtful questions. Students must ask
quality questions of all other students. “Wow that is cool” or “nice job” is
not a sufficient post in response to someone’s critique (think about the
instructions for DB Comment Threads).
Hopefully everyone will choose a different person and we will have a wide
variety of characters (I urge you to choose someone who is “lesser
known!”) But if you choose the same person as another student, these
individuals will be excellent candidates to “discuss” the person with!
5) Respond to those who have asked questions of you. It is expected that
students respond to questions about their presentation in a timely,
thorough, and professional manner. “I don’t know, there was no
information on that” is an acceptable answer, but elaborate and identify
any possible sources where the information could be found.
