The purpose of this analysis is to determine the author’s views concerning modernization/development as expressed in the plot. It should be divided into the following sections.
I. Introduction
State the purpose of your paper, including the author and title of the novel, and briefly summarize the main findings of your analysis (“I will show that the author views modernization as a ___________ process. “The author expresses the belief through the novel that the process of modernization benefits only ____________,” etc. (1 page). You may want to write this section after you’ve finished the rest of the paper.
II. Summary of the Plot
Briefly summarize the plot, describing the main character(s) and the major events, ending with the outcome (3-4 pages).
III. Analysis of the Plot
The plot should be analyzed from the point of view of the following questions (3-4 pages).
A. How does the author view modernization/development—as a positive or negative process or both? Why does he/she take this view (in terms of the evidence present in the plot)?
B. According to the author, who benefits the most and who is hurt the most by modernization/ development? In what specific ways are they benefited or hurt (in terms of the evidence present in the plot)?
Be sure to provide concrete examples from the plot to support the various points of your analysis, including the literary devices (dialogue, narration, character development, simile/metaphor and other symbolism) through which these examples are expressed.
IV. Conclusion
What does your analysis reveal about the assumptions the author holds concerning modernization/ development? That is, is it inevita¬ble, a process inherent in all societies? Or do agents from modern societies impose it as development on less modern societies? Do the outsiders have their own interests or those of the target population in mind when they try to impose development upon it? Finally, what is the value of reading fictional literature as a way to learn about modernization/development as opposed to reading “non-fiction” case studies (by the time you write this paper, you should have read at least a few such studies in Krishna et al)? (2-3 pages)
Be sure to provide page references for all quotes and assertions (paraphrased views of author). The length of the paper should be from nine to twelve pages, 12pt., double-spaced, with one-inch margins all around.
