Prepare a servant leadership journal of about one hundred to one hundred and fifty words.

the instruction : Student will be expected to respond to assigned questions about a chapter reading as a journal entry. Responses should be at least 100-150 words per question. Responses should use the language of the textbook and lecture material to demonstrate understanding of KEY ideas from reading the questions are : Similar to earlier leadership theories, Servant Leadership seems to focus a lot on leader attributes. More recent studies we have considered tend to examine Leader behaviors rather than attributes. Is SL more about leaders becoming altruistic or about leaders developing empowering behaviors? (I know its both—but does it seem to be more one than the other? Take a position and consider the implications of the tendency).

Notice that Liden, Wayne, et. al (2008) argue “that organizations that want to build a culture of servant leadership should be careful to select people who are interested in and capable of building long-term relationships with followers” (Northouse 242); in other words, a person willing to serve others more than their own career concerns. Is it fair/ethical to only promote managers who are more oriented to relationship building than to task accomplishment (think the Leadership Grid), who are more naturally inclined to be altruistic than to keep their focus on productivity?

Yukl (2012) says this approach will produce more leaders who will “serve as moral agents in society.” And Northouse notes that there is a “moralistic nature [rather than professional ethics] that seems to surround servant leadership” (p. 241). [In general, ethics refer to rules provided by an external source, e.g., codes of conduct in workplaces or professional ethics appropriate to a field of work. On the other hand, morals refer to an individual’s own principles regarding what’s right and wrong often grounded in a religious or spiritual worldview.] What do you believe about this criticism of the approach?
