Directions:
1) Research the topic below and choose an argumentative article. News articles will not allow you to answer all of the questions. You will learn the difference in class.
2) You may use the internet and research websites, such as CNN, Time Magazine’s website, Los Angeles Times, etc. You may also use print sources as well. Most public library have current periodicals for you to look at.
3) An MLA Works Cited is required for the article that you choose.
1) Summarize the article. This paragraph must have 6 sentences—no more and no less. It must be precise and clear. In other words, I should know everything about your article based on your summary. Do not quote anything in your summary. However, your summary should include the author’s name in the first sentence (or, if your article does not contain an author, use the article’s title).
2) State the author’s main argument in one sentence. What kinds of claim is it and why? This answer will have two sentences: stating the argument and labeling and explaining the claim. For example, “The author believes that blah blah should change because blah blah. This is a Claim of Policy because blah blah.” Please remember to properly capitalize the names of the claims. If you want to quote the article to help prove the claim being used, you may do so. This would add an additional sentence.
3) What kind of support did the author use? I want you to choose a paragraph in your article and label the kind of support being used. You need to use the full name of the support (remember to capitalize it correctly) and explain why it is that kinds of support. This will be three sentences—one sentence identifies and labels the support, the next sentence will quote it (MLA required), and the last sentence explains why.
4) I want you to apply the Elements of Thought and Intellectual Standards to your article. For this answer, choose any 2 Elements of Thought. Give your article a letter grade: A, B, C, D, or F (you can use + and – if you want). I want you to explain the reason you gave it that grade using at least 2 of the intellectual standards. You discussion should be about 3-5 sentences explaining the grade you gave each element for your article. For example:
Information: I give this element a C because it lacks depth and accuracy. Explain, explain, explain.
Implication: I give this element an F because it fails to be relevant and fair. Explain, explain, explain.
5) Do you agree or disagree with your author? Write a paragraph where you take a stand—I want you to either agree or disagree, not both. This paragraph should reach our range of sentences as discussed in class (10-16 sentences) and should include a quote from the article. You should follow the paragraph template as discussed in class (T/S EL E/Q A C).
