Exercise: Women and Social Movements Questions

Use the reading above, especially the primary documents themselves, to answer the questions below. (Note that all the following questions may not apply to your specific project, or you may not have enough information to thoroughly answer all of the questions. However, you should make your best guess based on the information you do have.) Refer specifically to at least TWO of the PRIMARY SOURCE DOCUMENTS from one of the document projects above in order to receive a passing grade.

1. What social movement did you choose? Provide a general description of the social movement you chose, including when and where the movement took place, and who was involved. You do not need to list all the specific people, but you should attempt to give the backgrounds of the women (based on the information you have available) according to religion, ethnicity, race, age, marital status, region, and class. Also, very importantly, you should identify the goals, strategies, and results of the movement.

2. What sources are provided by the editors of your social movement project? What are the strengths and limitations of these sources? Can you think of any other sources that might also help you answer the question? How do the sources that you have read (as well as the editors’ introduction) answer the posed question?

3. Why did women participate in the reform movement? Was the movement dominated more by women or men, or was it composed of a relatively equal number of men and women? Upon which authority did women draw upon to justify and explain their involvement in the reform movement? Did the activists meet with criticism by men or other women? If so, how did they defend their involvement in the movement? Did the participants USE the cult of true womanhood in their reform movement activism, or did their activism CHALLENGE true womanhood? Or both? (In your answer also use Through Women’s Eyes to give a brief definition of true womanhood.) Explain your answers.

4. Did the women participating in the reform movement attempt to raise the status of women and/or expand woman’s public role? Did these reform activists claim rights for women? Explain your answers.

5. DO NOT use sources other than those sources assigned for this class. Refer specifically to at least TWO of the PRIMARY SOURCE DOCUMENTS from the collection that you chose in order to receive a passing grade.

6. Do not plagiarize!!! You need to cite all quotations, paraphrases, summaries, and ideas that are not your own and not common knowledge. If in doubt, provide a citation. Use Chicago Manual of Style format for your citations OR include the author, source, and page numbers of your evidence in parenthesis at the end of each answer.
