For example, you may choose to discuss the technical innovations in Welles’ masterpiece, or the subversive ways in which Hitchcock’s psychological thriller deals with notions of memory and identity. At this point in the term, I’m sure that you’ll have some thoughts to share about the moviegoing experience as well as the new distractions we encounter when screening work online and/or from a laptop or mobile device. Since we’ve spent the term watching a variety of films, I thought that it might be enjoyable to screen these two lauded materpieces, Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane (1949) and Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958). These films have topped critics’ lists over the years, with Citizen Kane having been at the top for many decades. The British film magazine Sight & Sound, published by the British Film Institute, does extensive polling of both international filmmakers and critics once every ten years and has been recognized as authoritative in this regard. The most recent poll in 2012 caused quite a commotion, as it were, with Vertigo topping the list, knocking Citizen Kane from the position it held for fifty years.
