Cultural diversity is a very important tool in the success of many international businesses today. Diversity in a business setup brings fresh ideas, innovation, better employee relations & enhances creative problem solving which promote productivity in the work place. Workplace cultural diversity however is not without occasional problems. For example a Chinese manager at Lenovo moved to a senior management position within the company’s new offices in New York where the manager will work with former IBM employees could experience several challenges at his/her new managerial position due to cultural diversity.

The business culture and attitude for the American when it comes to getting business done is immediate, the Chinese on the other hand have found this tradition quite strange. A Chinese manager will only conduct a business comfortably once a friendship has been solidified through frequent meetings. Another problem is that, for a Chinese, if a business deal can be struck immediately, they do not see the need for a long-term relationship, this can be a major leadership problem for a senior Chinese manager because some business deals are as a result of a long-term relationship which Chinese do not value much. Due to this notion, both social and professional boundaries may become blurred and consequently affect the whole business operation.

Communication is vital in any leadership system. A senior Chinese manager in the U.S. working with the former IBM employees need to be fluent with the local language as no business can be transacted without proper communication. Another problem may arise due to relationships.  Americans treat friendship more casually while for the Chinese, the case is totally different. This cultural difference in relationship style may affect the Chinese manager on how he/she interacts with other workers and this can adversely affect the running of the business.

In conclusion the Chinese and United States cultures are different. A senior Chinese manager at Lenovo moved to the company’s new offices and working with the former IBM employees may face serious challenges that could affect his/her relationship with fellow workers as well as affecting the entire business operations due to cultural differences. However this could be solved by slowly learning and understanding cultural dynamics between the two communities.
