You must produce a portfolio, selecting 3 of the 5 given case studies. Within this portfolio you must:
• Analyse three of the five given mental disorders
• Analyse society’s negative attitudes that one of your case studies may experience and evaluate 2 support services you feel would benefit them.
Your work must include consistent referencing throughout to maximise your quality grade (GD7).
CASE STUDIES:
1. Melanie is a 26 year old who suffered from sexual abuse from the age of 12. She did not complete any schooling and has never been in employment. She experimented with drugs between the ages of 14 and 20. She has not taken drugs or alcohol for 6 years but suffers terribly with Agoraphobia (fear of open spaces). This anxiety disorder has resulted in Melanie not leaving the house for up to 4 weeks at a time.
2. Tariq is a 35 year old man who suffers with depression. He had a particularly bad episode of depression 18 months ago following the death of his mother, and had 12 months off work. He returned to work 6 months ago on a ‘graded return’. He is now up to 4 days a week at work, but is finding his workload particularly stressful. He doesn’t feel particularly welcome in his work either.
3. Frances is a 48 year old woman who was diagnosed with Schizophrenia aged 22. At 24 she had a daughter who she looked after independently when her party left her during her pregnancy. Her condition is well controlled medically and she works full time. However she has recently become concern that she is the victim of work place bullying.
4. Dylan is a 13 year old boy whose parents are currently going through a very messy divorce. Nobody knows it, but Dylan binges on food and then makes him self sick. Dylan feels that eating is the only thing he has control over. Dylan is picked on at school because ‘he is rubbish at football’ and is ‘the weirdo’.
5. Percy is a 56 year old alcoholic. He lives with his wife and their relationship is strained due to his drinking. He does not accept he has a drinking problem, he believes he is a social drinker only. He drinks 8-10 pints at least 4 times a week. His wife, Janice, is feeling very stressed and her friends are putting pressure on her to leave him.
