Compiling an Annotated Bibliography
1. An annotated bibliography is a bibliographical list in which each item is summarized and commented upon. It provides access to important, new, and updated information on relevant books and articles. As an assignment, it makes an interesting way of getting to know material that is available. Choose sources as requested for your assignment. Use the correct MLA or APA format to cite your sources.
2. After the citation, write a short summary (five to seven sentences) of the contents of each source followed by a sentence explaining how the source will be applicable to your paper.
3. When you have written your annotations:
alphabetize by authors last name or by first word in title if there is no author listed
double space the entire document
include your working title (for your essay) at the top of the document
include your working thesis statement (for your essay) following the working title
4. In order to show a variety of sources, make sure that among the ten item bibliography you include a variety of sources:
An academic article – required source
An academic book or legal/government document – required source
A newspaper article from a national or international newspaper – required source
NOTE: Sources must be current written in the last six (6) years or since 2010.
