An analysis memo (which you might also think of as a memo of understanding) is often used to take a close look at a specific issue. In the financial world, an analysis memo might look at a specific company, and try to explain what factors are causing success or failure (for example, you might start with a question like: Why has Nokia been less successful than its competitors in recent years?). In marketing, an analysis memo might examine how social media is used in a particular industry (is Twitter effective when used in haute couture, for instance?).
To begin the assignment:
• Brainstorm topics concerning a business sector, industry or field that interests you. What is the current state of that sector? What challenges does it face? What opportunities are developing? Ask a question such as, for example, “What are the issues and opportunities in the telecom industry?”
• After listing a range of issues and opportunities, select an issue and/or opportunity for more detailed research, analysis, and conclusions.
• Do preliminary research to assure that there is substantial information available on the current state of your topic.
Topic choice often affects the outcome of the assignment. For instance, if your report is merely descriptive, the sources are usually limited to those that do a good job explaining the topic. Descriptive topics lead to reports that merely summarize the findings. A more analytical topic calls for a variety of sources that speak to the complex issues raised and therefore leads to what we call a “research rich” report.
