Overall, your paper would be improved by incorporating more specific points from the Temperance Manualwhat else does it have to say about the detrimental effects of alcohol, both on families and in society as a whole? Incorporating more specifics from the Manual itself would be useful.
Secondly, how did the Manual influence society? Can you find information in a secondary source about how it was received, who read it, how many people decided to take the pledge, etc.? Providing a bit more depth about how it fit into the “reform culture” of the period would help. Regarding the market economy, how might factory owners have viewed the document, for instancedid they pressure their workers to take the pledge (use the textbook for clues here)? Also, make sure to distinguish the descriptions and arguments in the manual from the actual pledge, which was included at the end of the introductory section for readers to declare themselves.
Finally, you need to be more precise about the exact source you are using:
1. The source in Henrettas book is called The Temperance Manual, published in 1836. The actual Pledge occurs at the very end of the excerpted section, and while the pledge is one of the most important parts of the source, it is not the title of the whole source. You also keep referring to the manual as a letter, and while it is addressed, Respected Friend, it is not so much a letter but rather a published work.
2. Most importantly, it is also not exactly clear who wrote The Temperance Manual of 1836; it is seen as a corporate publication of the American Temperance Society itself. Justin Edwards and Lyman Beecher were Co-Founders of the American Temperance Society, and one or both of them likely had a hand in composing The Temperance Manual. Edwards also published earlier Temperance Manuals, via the American Tract Society (you can find these on Google Books), but they are different from the manual cited in Henretta. Since we dont know exactly who wrote the 1836 manual, you should address that point in your paper. It is okay to still highlight Edwardss life and activism in your paper, but you also need to incorporate Lyman Beecher as well and mention that both of these men were active in establishing the American Temperance Society, which corporately produced the Manual of 1836 that you discuss. Please do give attention to these points, as the Temperance Manual is considered a corporate publication of the Society, demonstrating the importance and power of the Society itself in promoting propaganda, etc.
