He was born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas, a small Christian town located by the New Mexico border. He would later be named “Buddy” by his parents. After a meteoric rise to musical stardom in 1957, Holly’s career would be cut short in a tragic plane crash in a lonely Iowa cornfield on February 3, 1959. He was 22 years old. Along with Holly, two other high profile rock n’ roll stars, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper, perished in the crash, leaving a legacy that would later be dubbed “The Day the Music Died” by Don McLean in his 1971 hit song “American Pie.”
As they say, the rest is history.
Your assignment:
- Your job is to make this guy famous again! Make him famous for the new generation as much as you can, be creative.
- To make Buddy Holly new and relevant again in the 21st You must think MODERN! Think of his glasses and how many people today wear black horn-rimmed glassed (including me) without ever knowing where the style originated.
- You will apply basic business principles around anything associated with his life, music, tragedy, song, image, etc…Those principles should include branding, marketing and perhaps small business applications.
- So what am I asking for? I am asking for you to research Holly’s history/brand and develop a relevant paper or product that would give him prominence in the 21st
- This could include art work, poetry, a business plan for something related to Holly, an essay, a product of some kind, a campaign, etc…Whatever you would like!
- If you design a product, you are required to submit at least two-three pages (you can write more) detailing your marketing efforts and how it applies. Remember, this was a young man who had a deep and profound impact on generations of musicians today, yet he is rarely only mentioned in obscure pop culture references.
- You can include pictures or creative staff.
