Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder
Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is one of the growth disorders where a person portrays abnormal behaviors and can effortlessly become excitable or enthusiastic. The people who have this disorder always have the inability to concentrate putting their focus on the unlimited phase of time (Buttross 3). This condition is mostly found in children, which sometimes continues through the adolescence period where it diminishes with age. There are adults who however suffer from the same disorder who happened to have the symptoms of the disorder since their childhood. In some cases it has been referred as the minimal intelligence damage which is controlled by the brain. This research is inclusive of the ADHD discussion and its effects to a family in which their child has the disorder.
ADHD is classified into three subtypes: primarily hyperactive-impulsive in which at least six symptoms of the hyperactivity-impulsivity are present. There are however inattention symptoms which are less than six, even though some inattention degree might be present. Predominantly inattentive subtype which is the second type is characterized in at least six symptoms of the inattention collection but with less than six hyperactivity-impulsive indications, though there may be hyperactivity-impulsive to some extent. Children who have this subtype show no difficulties alongside other children even in their interactions. Some of them sit quietly without paying any attention on the task which they are working on. In this state it is hard for teachers and parents to notice the disorder due to the overlooking of the child. The third subtitle is said to be more complex as it is the combination of the above two. Most children however who show this ADHD subtype, they always demonstrate six and above symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity (Mamen 54).
The causes related to ADHD are not well known. Hereditary genes however play a significant role as one of the major cause of the disorder. Environmental factors in one way also cause the disorder. When a woman during her pregnancy is involved in drugs such as alcohol taking and cigarette smoking the unborn child is likely to develop the ADHD when he is born. At the same time children in their pre-unit classes which are exposed on high intensity lead are always at a risk of developing the symptoms related to ADHD. Children who might have suffered brain injury they sometimes show the symptoms related to these ADHD. Some food additives have link on hyperactivity such as the artificial food colors. The treatments which are offered to this kind of disorder pay more attention on symptoms reductions as well as improving the functionality of the child. Medications are offered as a treatment, different kinds of psychotherapy, offering of education and some training. The combination of these treatments proves to be most effective in managing the disorder as it is hard to completely cure it (Wolraich 316).
The family with a child who shows ADHD symptoms is always affected in many ways. Many of the children have conduct disorder in which they always act inappropriately, violate others rights at the same time societal norms. They also show oppositional rebellious disorder which is characterized on hostility, intentionally arguments, with defiant conduct towards authorities. The family as a whole is viewed by the society as its failure to instill the discipline required to their child but it is just a disorder like any other. Due to the inattention behaviors the child forgets things very fast and end up switching into another activity (Matson 48). For instance when a child is left to look after a young infant he or she may forgets and go out to play with the others. The young infant when left alone in the house may even cause some damage or hurt himself like in a case where he gets hold of the sharp object such as a knife. The family has to spend on the medication of the infant which should not have been the case if he was well looked after.
The child may not follow instructions as required in school while at the same time experience some difficulties when processing information. When therefore given the homework, he is then in trouble on completing the same as he can not remember what they learnt. He even end up losing the equipments needed like pencils or even forgetting his writing book at school as he goes home. The parent is forced to buy him new equipments to help him do the homework thus double spending. If this child is hyperactive, he may end up playing with any sort of material at his sight. For instance, playing with naked electric wires which are a threat to the entire family as they can cause fire outbreak or even opening a gas cooker and leaving the gas licking which upon explosion the family suffers a lot may be on burns or deaths. On impulsivity children are very impatient such that they show difficulties when in a hurry and fail to wait for what they want. If the child is thirsty and there is a hot drink which is prepared for him, he burns himself upon taking the drink without ones knowledge and ends up pouring it. Many families have ended up spending unnecessarily as a result of the mistakes done on damages by the child who has ADHD.
In conclusion, it is common for many families to think that their child who shows some impulsive disorder or hyperactive behaviors have some disciplinary problems. Children are not in a position to give out a clear depiction of actions and being responsible by themselves. At the young stage they do not have the needed communication skills and so upon punishment of their mistakes they end up stomping on greater mistakes. A family with such a child in many times finds difficulties in handling the child and may not even seek for medical attention thus the child might grow up to adulthood with the kind of behaviors which are hard to change in older years since they may become habits. When diagnosing ADHD it is important to put into consideration of child’s behaviors since there is no laboratory test on the diagnoses of the disorder (Buttross 32). We all have different personalities which is also the case in children and so their temperaments and different personalities should never be mistaken as ADHD when they act impulsively, fail to concentrates or even get distracted at one time of their lives.
It is therefore important for the family as a whole to seek for medical attention upon notice of the ADHD symptoms. It is also necessary for the pregnant mothers to have proper diet and avoid anything that might increase the risk ADHD symptoms such as alcohol. A family with a child who has ADHD needs some therapy on how to handle the child on his disruptive behaviors as well as ways to encourage the transformation of the behaviors. This family also needs a lot of guidance and parental understanding as well as by the other siblings. The parents should therefore seek information on the benefits and the cost incurred on medical interventions as well as discussing the different treatment options with the attending physician. The family’s response and its way of its relationship therefore, affect much of the well being of the child thus adjustments are necessary. The amount of time and money which is spent on treatment cannot at any time be replaced with the transformation of behavior for a lifetime.
