Bernard

Read: “Cultural Anthropology and the Social Sciences” by H. Russ Bernard. Those with no background in the social sciences might want to look over this glossary of terms assembled by Ken Morrison. (This is optional and not included on Blackboard.) For those who prefer a video version of some of the same material, here is Alan Macfarlane speaking on some of the topics we will cover. In the first part of the course you will be asked to read selections of social theory and write up notes or reading summaries. These should include general statements about the content as expressed in your own words, something like, “in this section the author seems to be talking about property rights and why they are important to politics.” You should include things you don’t understand (e.g. “I have no idea what the author means by ‘production’ on page 41 or why it is so important.”) Your notes should also include verbatim quotes by the authors that exemplify important points. All quotes MUST have “quote marks” around them, and have the page number of the quote next to them (2). You can conclude your notes by 1-2 major questions you would like to discuss in class.
