Communication and Media
Introduction
There exists a mutual relationship between trait-like communication apprehension and the resting alpha range asymmetry in the anterior cortex. Most of the research conducted by the cognitive neuroscience suggested that by using this asymmetry, it consisted of a relatively stable and unborn transitory anxiety. This article can be classified under Communication and Social Cognition Division as it entails the whole process of communication linking it to a face to face communication process articulated in the article. One of the authors of this article illustrates the importance of communication teachers assisting their students in developing and changing their attitudes and behaviors as this will be a factor in their success. The second factor that attributes this communication and social cognitive division to this article is its communication relations to relevant topics and contexts which do not shy away from associating themselves with social influence and perceptions in individual differences of communication. The article illustrates the benefit of teachers using strategic intervention in understanding the nature of the problem. To the author, this may require interpersonal relationships, personal educational experiences and assessing individual career path of the students. This is evident, as the individual differences of students reside from the anterior region of cortex in efforts to relate their emotions and behaviors to communication.
Despite this article being positive towards understanding interpersonal differences, emotions and attitudes in communication, a lot of criticism has been attached to its findings and results. One of them is the overreliance on information processing analogues by the neuroscientists. With technology being used mostly in research and data manipulation, it is posed with its own shortcomings. Overreliance on information processing analogues can prove to be costly if fails to give the correct data as expected due to physical or technical problems which include sampling errors. The second critique is that humans are not hardheaded, but they’re hardwired. In that human beings are mostly influenced by the social circles as they tend to behave and react to the information that they listen to. Their information processing is limited to their personality and individual differences when they are communicating a factor which is not taken into account in this article. Authors in this article believe that the role of social cognition in human communication is the only cause of interpersonal language and social interaction (Beatty, et al, 2011).
This research is also faced with shortcomings as most of the results established a large implication for communication education. One of its shortcomings is that it poses a direct implication to the communication educators who develop and assess the programs mostly designed to reduce trait like CA. most of the communication educators limit the amount of change that can be accomplished through such processes. The second shortcoming is that the communication educator’s strategy for dealing with such problems may be misinformed or the data regarding the process may be misinterpreted if both of the enterprises are based on a model of CA which is not complete. The last shortcoming established in this research is that observations and instructional goals were underscored when teaching communication skills to students. Despite reducing negative feelings about attitudes and behavior among the students, the communication educators preferred primary treatment to be a modification to define behaviors which provide grounds for ‘communicatively apprehensive’. Such shortcomings affected the development of interpersonal relationships.
