1619 was the year slavery began in the region of Chesapeake. The slaves that were captured were forced to work in the iron industries in the southern region. Theses slaves were hired from their masters while others were owned by the iron industries and they used to do all sorts of hard work (Kulikoff, 1986). These slaves were mostly the Africans and they were treated in a very mysterious way such that they were investigated because they were never trusted by their masters. Slaves who did not do as they were expected were punished physically by their iron masters so that they could not even have the chance of planning an escape plan (Whitman, 2007).
Slavery in New York City began in the year 1626 whereby these slaves were mostly used in the households as laborers or domestic workers. Unlike the slaves in Chesapeake region, the slaves that were in New York worked in the shipping industries and other worked as artisans (Harris, 2003). The slaves were only punished by their masters only if they were given permission from the authority which is quite contrary to the slave system in Chesapeake region whereby slaves were punished by their masters without any permission from the authority.
The slaves in New York were not investigated like the slaves in Chesapeake region and those that wanted to escape could have done that (Berlin, 2005).The slavery in New York and Chesapeake were similar in the sense that the slaves were owned by their masters. In both regions they were punished by their masters and they were all expected to abide by the rules of their masters.
The urban slavery is completely different from the plantation slavery. Plantation slavery involved the slaves to do hard work and work for so many hours whereby they were harvesting crops and picking tobacco and wheat. Urban slavery did not involve this because the slaves worked fewer hours and they did easy jobs like doing transportation and house chores. The plantation slavery was very harsh because the slaves were brutally punished and had no freedom while in urban slavery the slaves were not treated that bad and they had the freedom to choose whether work or not.
The reason why urban slavery was different from plantation slavery was because the urban slaves had established good communication with their masters whereby they developed mutual relationship. Because of this, their masters did not feel the need to mistreat them.
