Final paper: Your final paper should be a minimum of 7 pages long (“Times” font, 12-point, double-spaced, standard margins), not including bibliography and any illustrations.
Your paper should be original research. You can compare and contrast two films, discuss or critique a few scholarly articles, investigate a topic of interest to you, or develop your answers to some of the reading questions from journal homework into an essay-length discussion. You can also compare Queer Chinese Cultures with other queer cultures (for example, you can talk about stereotypes of gay Asian men; compare “tomboy” culture in Korean youth fashion with Taiwanese queer “T” cultures, or look at notions of masculinity in gay subcultures in Malaysia, India, the U.S..; you can also write about issues of concern to Asian American identity and sexuality; or you could compare and contrast Last Words from Montmartre with another experimental lesbian novel, like Springer’s The Vicious Red Relic, Love…you get the idea). Feel free to email me if you want to ask about a certain topic or idea for your final paper.
But no matter what…YOU MUST INCLUDE AN ACADEMIC BIBLIOGRAPHY OF AT LEAST THREE ITEMS. This means that you can use any sources you want—internet, Youtube, Wiki, etc.—as long as you always include at least three standard bibliographic sources as well. When I read your papers, I always check the bibliography first. If you aren’t sure how to format the bibliography, when in doubt just follow the formatting of the bibliography from one of our class readings to get an idea of what’s required. You can use MLA, Chicago, or other citational styles as long as you pick one and use it consistently throughout your paper. You can also consult the example of an “A”-level paper that I’ve added to TED, to get an idea of what it takes to write a top-grade paper for one of my classes.
