Website Evaluation Assignment
In this assignment you will address the following scenario:
The company you work for lacks a web presence, but your boss, Howard Beale, has decided the time has arrived to create a website. You’ve been asked to look at a couple of competitor websites to determine “best practices” for creating the company’s site. Mr. Beale has instructed you to email a memo of your evaluation.
You will choose the two websites to compare/evaluate. Ideally, the websites you choose will pertain to your future career. If not, they should at least “fit” the scenario described above. For example, evaluating the websites for CNN and Fox News, or ESPN and Sports Illustrated, wouldn’t make sense, because if your company was competing with any of those entities, it would already have a website.
Because your memo will be delivered as an attachment, you will insert hyperlinks for each site’s main page.
Your evaluation must incorporate at least three relevant web guidelines discussed on pages 239-43. You don’t have to address every issue identified there; select the criteria you use wisely.
Your memo should reflect consideration of the guidelines provided on pages 70-77 of the textbook. Pay special attention to the following:
- ♣ Tone– you’re addressing a superior, and your tone/word choice should reflect that.
- ♣ Clarity– use clear, concrete language; identify and resolve typos and other errors.
- ♣ Brevity– provide your evaluation in specific terms but with an economy of language. NOTE– Because the memo will discuss multiple issues in some detail, it may exceed one page. If so, use a header on additional pages which includes the memo’s subject line and page number.
- ♣ Format– provide identifying information (74); utilize the text’s strategies (76) to structure the memo’s content (introduction, body, conclusion); use organizational markers (77) effectively (this will be especially important given the complexity of the memo’s content).
