Crime prevention
Crime prevention is any activity that minimizes criminal activities. It is the anticipation, appraisal, and commencement of some actions to reduce crime. The ultimate purpose of crime deterrence is to deter offensive behaviours and augment security and safety that further promote and develop quality life in the society. Crime prevention requires cooperation from the members of community and a central stand in the law enforcement. According to Joyce (2006), crime has been a major concern in the present communities. Most crimes contribute to economic and physical degradation and prevent inhabitants from progressing in day-to-day lives. By observing the increasing patterns of crime, most governments have enforced laws and regulations to maintain criminal justice.
Crime prevention is a common subject discussed in today’s society. By its purest form, crime prevention looks at ways and methods that discourage criminal activities in the society. Crime prevention can be divided into various strategies such as place, situation, and people. The situation strategy is the blend of place and people initiatives. The strategy attempts to create a favourable environment free from committing crime and increasing security measures. The people oriented strategy deters crime through social development. This strategy evaluates the root cause of crime and establishes protective measures that would alleviate those risks. Place based strategy deter crime through environmental models or designs. It targets locations and places where crime takes place. When three concepts are combined, they form an effective and holistic crime prevention package.
The relationship of crime prevention to the Criminal Justice System
This section discusses the association of crime reduction and the system of criminal justice. Burns (2007) argues that, the ultimate goal or purpose of crime prevention is to protect the community from felony. A common relationship that emerges in crime prevention and criminal justice system is that the two elements seek to reduce the material and human cost that hinder growth and development. The criminal justice work hard to control and prevent criminal activities that threaten human life and national development. The two aspects recognize that there should be effective communication between the public and the government on what is happening in the society. Citizens should trust the implemented system that deters crime. Attitudes to criminal justice determine social demographic values and characteristics concerning crime and its operation. Various factors determine public satisfaction such as education level, personal safety, information provided by the criminal justice system.
The criminal justice system plays a crucial role in creating awareness especially in promoting a safe community. The available information on the criminal justice system lays a strong ground for the public to understand the consequences of committing crimes. Some of the repercussions include imprisonment, death sentence, capital sentence, or fine. When the society understands the effect of engaging into the crime, they avoid crime and work hard to promote a safe society. Effective communication can only occur when the public and the immediate government work hand in hand to promote a safe environment.
Crime prevention programs
Many institutions have worked hard to deter crime in the society. A perfect example of such an institution is Australian Institute of Criminology that works hard to mobilise people and motivate them to solve and minimize the risk of crime (Gould, 2008). The institution provides a forum for crime prevention in New Zealand and Australia. The main goal of the institution is to promote security and justice in the community. The institution addresses safety and emerging crime issues and further promotes principles of crime prevention. Typically, the institution incorporates other approaches such as housing, human services, education, and health to prevent crime in the long-term. It also promotes personal safety, school safety, workplace safety, and robbery prevention. The organization ensures that the society understands the danger of crime and initiatives that promote a society or community that embraces good conduct.
The National Institute of Justice (NIG) is another institution whose mission is to enhance public safety and justice in the community (Gould, 2008). The institution is the research and evaluation of criminal offenses in the United States. NIG focuses on tools that stimulate, evaluate, and facilitate criminal justice system and information. NIG tackle crime issues such as human trafficking, corruption, terrorism, cyber crime, and rape among others. For the past years, NIG has worked hard to tackle the emerging crime issues that affect most communities particularly in the United States. NIG has laid a strong ground to address crime issues affecting the community. Additionally, the institution provides tools that meet and solve the challenge of crime.
From the above analysis, it is evident that every community should work hard to deter crime. As discussed, crime increases poverty and other crimes that affect the well-being of people.
