While most educators support the idea of including students with disabilities in general education classrooms, there is some debate about how inclusion plays out in reality. Moreover, parents of children with disabilities may have a variety of experiences that cause them to either support or oppose their child’s inclusion in a general education classroom.
This week’s course text reading presents these and other perspectives both for and against inclusive education. As a special educator, it will be important for you to understand these perspectives as many individuals will look to you for information about the purpose of inclusion as well as the practices that help support it.
For this Discussion, you will be asked to defend an argument for inclusion. As you may be required to defend a position that you are not entirely in agreement with, you may wish to role play as a parent of a student with disabilities, a special educator, general educator, or other stakeholder.
You will be on the side of defending FOR inclusion. Post an argument including at least three main points with reasonings for supporting inclusion.
Include in your argument specific practices that contribute to or detract from the overall effectiveness of inclusive education. Be sure to support your argument with information from this week’s Learning Resources as well as professional journal articles you may have read, and relevant observations and insights from personal experiences.
