Learning Activity 3.1: Devotional
Devotional
The devotionals in this course are taken from the book Wheres God on Monday? Hopefully the use of this book in the capstone course will tie together many of the discussions you have had in the past regarding Christian business people and the importance of your work in the marketplace. Through the reading of this book and your reflections you may find elements that you will want to integrate into your Christian business person presentation.

Objectives

Apply Christian principles in critical thinking and decision making.

Theory and Context
Consider the following thoughts of Mackenzie and Kirkland, Reading Ecclesiastes forces us to ask the difficult questions about the meaning of life and of workthere is clearly a warning for readers on the subject of workThe first warning is not to count on building monuments that will endure foreverThe second warning is to not look for easily quantifiable value in every task we do and every moment we spendThe third warning in Ecclesiastes is that if we work only for ourselves, it will seem pointless in the end.

The reading for this week covers some additional critical areas that Christians need to consider in relationship to work; one of those is the concept of the Sabbath. Rest is all about recovering our equilibrium with God, with ourselves, with others, and with creation. The goal of leisure is personal enjoyment which may well be a by-product of rest, but not the primary purpose. In fact, leisure can frequently divert us from rest.

The other area that this weeks reading touches on is the idea of dividing our lives between secular and sacred activities. This strange habit we have of splitting life into spiritual and secular boxes just doesnt appear in the story of Gods creation workWhat seems clear in Pauls teachings is that: All work is of value and significance in spite of the status (or lack of it) given by the surrounding culture. There is no hierarchy of tasks in Gods economyEverything we do needs to be connected with who we are in Christ.
