Book Review Assignment* Objective: You will review a science-based piece of literature (from the list attached to this sheet). To help you understand the style and voice of a book review, I invite you to review the following: Marcia Bartusiak’s “Go Up, Young Man,” a 1995 review of a book about colonizing the galaxy Richard Fortey’s review of Weird Life, about strange life forms on earth Stuart Pimm’s review of Letters to a Young Scientist, which contains career advice, and other things, by the eminent social- biologist, E.O. Wilson Elizabeth Royte’s review of The Poisoned Earth, a biography of Rachel Carson. Elizabeth Royte’s “Signs of Life,” a review of a book about organ harvesting from cadavers The nature of these reviews can span from direct in nature to more of an essay style and will revolve on the points, expressed judgments, descriptions, and perspectives of the reviewers. This all should provide you with ideas about how to maybe structure your own review and give you a good idea of what I am looking for in your book review. Additional Information: The publication you choose to review should be selected from the list on the next page. This list was created from a selection of books that were considered “must reads for a scientist” and “had/have an impact that made a personal connection with science in a soulful way” among my scientifically entrenched colleagues. Your book review will be due by December 4th. Please use the CSE (Counsel of Science Editors) format when constructing your analysis. Abstracts, headings, appendixes, and acknowledgments are not needed for this assignment and should not appear in your report. Please note: Reviews filled with fluff and unnecessary add in sentences that take up space and offer nothing to the review will receive a deserving grade.
