The final individual research paper should be 15-18 pages in length, typed and double spaced. It should be based on one of the topics discussed in class. It is your responsibility to find a subject of interest within those topics. You must confirm your topic and a bibliography with me in a written note or email – deadline to be determined. Your paper may be based on ethnographic research or the theoretical analysis of a specific topic. But the source material for your paper must include at least two full books and four substantial academic journal articles (ie. academic articles, not newspaper articles or blogs) that were not part of the course readings. Of course, you may use course readings as additional material. The papers must demonstrate the ability to write clearly, carry out thorough research (in primary as well as secondary sources, with an ability to distinguish between good and poor scholarship), and make solid fact-based arguments. Creative, complex and adventurous thinking is encouraged – as long as it is carried out with some rigor.
