The goal of this assignment is for you to craft a strong central thesis and support that argument throughout your essay with evidence from the readings. Please write a paper that is typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, stapled, and double-sided if possible. Do not conduct any outside research. Your paper should closely examine the assigned texts, using examples from the readings as evidence to support your claims. The paper should be at least four pages and not more than five.
ANSWER ONE OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
Please choose ONE of the following questions to answer. You will be considering the readings assigned for Weeks 4, 5, and 6 for this paper. Please choose three of the six readings to explore.
1. The readings we read that focused on immigration and immigrants in the United States (Garland’s, “Building the Apparatus of Immigration Control,” Baldoz’s “Another Mirage of Democracy,” and Garcia’s “Cain contra Abel”) have all explored:
a. Immigrants struggles to gain access to full citizenship.
b. The emergence and meanings of anti-immigrant sentiment.
c. The relationship between immigrants’ experiences and questions about labor.
Choose ONE of these three themes and use evidence from the readings to analyze why it has been a central element of immigrants’ experiences in the United States. Focus on a commonality in all of the readings as a way to narrow down your discussion.
HELPFUL POINTS TO PAY ATTENTION TO:
Thesis: Make your argument specific. Narrow down the question I posed. The narrower, the better. Make an argument that is based on the sources that you have available to you. You may want to write your introduction/thesis, after you figure out what argument you want to make by analyzing the readings.
Opening Paragraph: Begin with a claim that is linked to the readings and the topic at hand. Resist the temptation to make claims like, “throughout history, inequality has shaped the human condition.” These kinds of throw-away openings distract from the deeper claims I would like you to make.
Passive voice: Use the active voice instead of the passive voice. In the active voice, it is clear who is acting. For example, “The Sugar Trust, a group of four large US-owned sugar companies that had invested in Puerto Rican sugar production, worked to win passage of legislation that guaranteed their right to export sugar into the US market without tariffs.” Here is that sentence written more vaguely and in the passive voice: “Free trade was won for sugar coming from Puerto Rico.”
Quotations: You may use quotes, but do not overuse quotes. I suggest that you include no more than one quote per page. The quote should be no more than two lines. When you use a quote, right after you use it, explain what it demonstrates – quotations cannot speak for themselves.
Sources: Do not use any other sources aside from the readings that appear on the syllabus. I am interested in seeing that you have analyzed and understood the assigned texts.
Organization: Include an introduction and a conclusion. Each reading can be examined in one or two body paragraphs (perhaps the easiest way to structure the paper). Include a topic sentence at the beginning of each paragraph that links the evidence you will discuss to the larger argument/thesis.
