Discuss the gap between rich and poor in New York city.

Your final project for this course will be a 10-12 page paper (double spaced). It must include the following components: –

Part I: A description of the issue

o In part one, you do research on the issue that interests you, and then you provide a basic description of the issue that draws upon that research. Describe the issue in a way that would be understandable to people without first-hand knowledge of your issue. Think in terms of how you would explain your issue to an interested, educated, general audience.

o You should use the academic databases that you have access to via the university library to do this research. It is okay to use some information available on the web, but your research must include academic sources as well.

o This part of your project should be about 5 pages in length. It can be longer if it includes appropriate charts, maps, photographs, etc. –

Part II: Analysis of your issue through the lens of Catholic Social Thought. Use course readings, principles, and concepts from our course to provide an ethical analysis of the issue at hand. Why is this issue of moral concern? How might the issue be addressed or the problem remedied? You should make specific reference to course materials and other relevant academic sources that draw upon Catholic Social Thought to support your analysis. Note: You can also use your research skills to enhance this portion of the project. For example, you might read a journal article or two that specifically addresses your issue from an ethical or theological perspective.

o Part II of your paper should be about 5-7 pages in length. So 5 pages for part I + 5-7 pages for part II = a total of 10-12 pages.

o Your work should cite the sources that you draw upon using footnotes. Follow a standard form of citations (Chicago/Turabian style, APA, etc.)

o Suggestions: 1. You might seek out some sources from the field of ethics and moral theology that pertain to your issue. You might try searching for “Catholic” AND [your issue] or “Ethics” AND [your issue], or of course “Catholic Social Teaching” AND [your issue] in an academic database. I’d recommend the ATLA and Catholic Periodical Index search tools in EBSCOHost. If you are addressing a major issue, the chances are your project is not the very first instance of ethical and moral analysis of the issue. Seek out sources that will support and enhance (but not substitute for) your own analysis. 2. Revisit the principles of Catholic social teaching, the common good, etc. Think about what connections you can make between those sources and your issue. Be sure to include these in your analysis. 3. In some cases you might think about how CST leads you to look at an issue in a way that is unique. How does an analysis rooted in CST add to the wider ethical conversation about your topic? 4. You might think of the overall project as a vehicle for educating an audience about your issue AND Catholic social teaching. You want to demonstrate your own expertise on both topics.

– Part III: A Bibliography. As indicated above, this project requires research. Prepare a bibliography of all of the sources you consulted for this project. Your bibliography should include: o At least five scholarly sources (i.e., books or peer-reviewed journal articles from a library database) that were not used in the course o At least three course readings that were assigned for the course. Follow any standardized system of citation (Turabian, Chicago Manual of Style, etc.). Choose whatever style you prefer, but BE CONSISTENT (don’t mix two systems) and follow that system carefully. Whenever possible, provide a link to the resource you are describing.
