AREAS IN STEM THAT INTEREST ME:
oncology, I was astounded by the genetics, bio technology and disease chapters.
PREVIOUS RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:
In the summer of 2012, I was granted a Dean of Science Research Internship from Carleton University which made me discover a whole new love for biochemistry and biotechnology. I worked under a graduate student who was working to tag cancerous components cells by using aptamers and to detect early signs of breast cancer. I loved working in the lab this past summer and I loved working alongside these intriguing projects while learning different techniques of DNA extraction and analysis. The research was about early detection of breast cancer by testing tear droplets for certain molecules. This opportunity widened my field of vision to various things. I came to work every day, eager to learn new things. Being involved in this research made me feel like I’m a part of the revolution against breast cancer.
LONG TERM GOALS:
My dream is to help humanity by becoming a doctor. I want to assist people to lead healthier and happier lives. In the summer of 2014 I have been involved in shadowing many physicians including surgeons and doctors in internal medicine. I find joy coming every day at the hospital to see what that day had in store for me. Each patient I came across has different problems with different conditions. I always wanted to be passionate about what work I do, to be excited about coming back to work in the morning. My mind was circulating around the idea to become a doctor since I was in sixth grade, but throughout the years the things I came across and experienced reinforced my decision. I always wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself. In the future, I want not only be a doctor, but also a mentor to my younger s, a caretaker for my elders, and an overall asset to humanity.
