Drawing on the readings from this quarter, discuss one or more interactive media objects in relation to critical design and theory. In what ways can interactive works bring to light critical issues of culture and society. There are several ways to do this. One may be to examine an interactive media object in light of our authors. Is the work critical? Why or why not? How so? For example, if the object is critiquing an aspect of society, what is it trying to say and how does its method of interaction apply to this argument? Alternatively, you may wish to critique an interactive media object for a lack of criticality. You may notice an opportunity for critical insight and offer ways for the object to be more critical. BE BOLD.
1. The interactive media object is described in its capacity to produce subjects or express identity
2. Paper contains clear thesis statement; thesis contains clear stance/argument
3. Interaction are clearly linked to thesis &/or argument of paper; includes examples
4. Ideas in paper are clear and logical
5.Course readings are used to support the thesis/ideas
6. Ideas are insightful/interesting (author attempts to explain the importance of this example/ideas/argument)
7.Ideas are well argued (terms are defined; examples used to support statements, etc.)
8.Paper uses formal academic style
9.Citations are used properly and consistently
What to Do (nuts and bolts):
Pick an interactive experience (game, object, art, app, what have you).
Analyze the interaction of this experience/object/media/thing. To wit:
Richly describe the interaction. Make me, your reader, understand what’s happening.
Create and craft an argument. Some ideas you might write about:
What’s at play?
What’s at stake?
What is the point?
What is (or is not) successful?
What is novel?
Pull on the texts from the course (you may use others as well, if you are so inclined) to critically analyze the interaction.
Use author definitions
Base your argument on the arguments of these texts
Use the media object as a source for your argument
