Endangered species

Endangered species

The world is endowed with a large number of different species that add to its aesthetic value. The different types of species have their own special role to play in the balancing of the ecosystem. The ecosystem exists in such a way that all species live in symbiotic relationship with each other. The disappearance of certain species in the ecosystem crates a gap in the food chain or the system, thereby causing adverse effects on the rest of the species. Over the years, some of the species have disappeared completed and others have had their numbers drastically diminished. This has been mainly due to man’s activities. Since man is the only specie known to have advanced intellect, and whose activities are the major contributors to the endangering of the species, it is his sole responsibility to conserve the ecosystem and protect the remaining species from becoming extinct (Barr, 2008).

The extinction of other creatures ends up in having both direct and indirect effects on the human population. Man’s existence is solely dependent on other species. Man derives his basic requirements, which are mainly food, shelter and clothing from the existing species. The extinction of certain species that are a staple food for a certain community will definitely end up having a direct effect on the community. The extinction of marine species like the tilapia will have a direct effect on the communities that mainly depend on these species for their food or income. Man’s activities that lead to the extinction of certain species ought to be halted.

An entire species cannot be equated to any economic gain whatsoever. Ethics demands that man conducts his activities in a manner that does not harm the ecosystem. The recovery and preservation of these creatures is hampered by sheer ignorance and the fact that the activities that cause the damage are essential for man’s survival. These include oil, timber harvesting, and farming et al. if I were elected president, my official policy on endangered species would be to reverse the effects by ensuring that the current human activities are in no way harmful to the environment. The trade offs that I would make would be to close down any company and halt any activity that threatens the existence of a certain specie.

Happy accidents in science

It is believed that most of the world discoveries were made by chance. This means that the scientists were not necessarily expecting that particular outcome or observation but literary stumbled upon it. I have personally experienced some happy accidents in my life. one is when I realized that one can trace out the outline of a rough substance e.g. a coin, by placing the object below the canvas and rubbing with a pencil on top. In order for a research scientist to come across a happy accident, Pasteur says that he or she must have a prepared mind. By this he means that the scientist must be in a position to make the necessary observations and interpret them.

He is then able to explain the existing phenomena with the current activity. Without this, the accidental observation will just pass out as any other occurrence and he or she will miss a great moment of insight. In order for one to have his mind to be open to chance, one must be keen to take note of any observations that are evident around him. One must also possess an inquisitive nature to question the reason behind the observable happenings.

Science is a study that tries to explain the various observable phenomena in existence. That is why scientists are generally inquisitive in nature. In the process of conducting various researches and tests, scientists give an account of every result they get whether it is within their expectations or not. In the process of trying to explain the unexpected results, scientists are able to analyze their accidents and in the process, they have ended up in making important discoveries. The scientific experiments that are usually conducted by scientists are founded on ideas and hypothesis that are not clearly proven. This means that not all the features of the experiments are known to detail. The scientists therefore expose themselves to great amounts of risks. A good example is the scientist Marie Curie who exposed herself to harmful rays as she was conducting experiments with radioactive material. She was not aware of the presence of the radioactive waves and it was until her death that it was realized what had killed her (Grant, 1959)
