 Report

Introduction

Anti- foreign feelings or sentiments result from a number of issues that the residents of a country perceive or go through because of the influx of foreigners. Such sentiments have an origination and if not well managed, can lead to dire consequences for both the residences and the foreigners. This report assesses and analyses foreign sentiments faced by various residents in their countries.

This report was requested by the director in the prime ministers office-Ms Ho Mary.   There is need to a need revisit the anti-foreign policy to ensure that problems related to the foreigners are mitigated. This report comes at an appropriate time when many countries are grappling with the influx of foreigners. This report was requested in 2012.  As an immigration personnel, I have the information and understanding pertaining to foreigners and foreign policies, hence given the responsibility to assess the anti-foreigners effectives.

Reasons for undertaking the report

The report was undertaken to help evaluate and assess anti-foreign sentiments. One of the problems that face many countries with anti-foreign policies is dealing with foreigners (Hainsworth, 2007, p. 128). The report is therefore aimed at providing a road map of the foreign policy in the country to help come up with amicable strategies of dealing with challenges that arise due to foreigners. There are many reasons that cause people to migrate to other countries such as war, lack of employment opportunities and drought among many others. The country that provides residence to foreigners needs to have appropriate laws and structures to manage the foreigners’ influx.

Foreigners may be allowed in a country to help the government to perform various tasks.  A country may be in shortage of labor force because of low population and this may compel a government to allow foreigners (Wang & Okano-Heijmans,  2011, p. 127). Other reasons for allowing foreigners are to help balance the population of a country. A good example of this scenario was Singapore. Singapore had a low population growth rate and therefore it was compelled to allow migrants to help balance its population (New trachIndia 2013). For instance, according to the central intelligence agency world fact, by 2011 Singapore was amongst the lowest countries in terms of birth rate at 7.72 births per 1000.  The country experienced a number of problems that were linked to the foreigners such as crimes and careless driving and lack of employment opportunities for its natives and this caused conflict between the foreigners who accounted for 40% of the pollution with the native Singaporeans.

Such problems and challenges have contributed to the compilation of this report. The sentiments concerning foreigners need not to be ignored by any responsible government because of the magnitude of effects that it can cause to the states. The case of Singapore is a good example of the consequences of this. Therefore, this report is very essential in providing a limelight to the situation of foreigner in the country to help prevent such consequences related to immigrants.

Collection of Information

Information is very essential as it helps people in making decisions concerning situations and issues that face them in their life. In gathering data or information, it is imperative that reliable sources are used so as to enhance objectivity and to increase the confidence level of the information.  In order to compile this report, information was accessed from government library and departments of migration.  Further information was also accessed from interviews with top government officials in the departments of foreign policy and immigration. Such officers had information/statistics that pertained to the immigrations trends of the country for a number of years.  Information from journals and publications was also used and was compared with the information that enabled the success of the report.

Findings

The rate of migration has reduced compared to the recent past years. This reduction has been attributed to changes in the foreign policy laws. The government-enacted legislations that were stringent; before a person is allowed in the country they must comply with a number of rules such as the requirement to be above the age of 18 years and state the reason for their migration (Hyun, & Park, 2011, p. 265). Furthermore, the time limit for staying in the country as a foreigner was limited. This contributed to the reduction in the number of immigrants (Country Commerce 2012). Furthermore, the increase in foreigners in the past caused a lot of challenges to the residents of country which contributed or played a role in stiffening the rules. Many causes contributed led to people to move from their home countries. Some of the foreigners fled their countries because of different reasons such as search for greener pastures, wars, political instability,   and advancement in education among others.

Recommendation

The government has the responsibility of regulating the number of foreigner who comes in the country. This is the only way that it will have to solve problems that are perpetrated by foreigners such as drug trafficking and lawlessness. This can be done by formulation of policies that are geared at reducing the rate of immigration.  Stringent measures are important in solving these problems. However, the government has done a recommendable job in managing foreigners and this will help to solve problems and conflicts that are normally experienced in other countries between the foreigners and the native residences.
