Ethnic and Race Relations

 

The objective of this assignment is to help you begin to understand racial and ethnic relations and how they are shaped by a variety of social factors, particularly your own history and upbringing. This is largely a reflective essay, not a research paper, and should be 3 pages long.

 

Step One: Personal Background

Consider carefully your own personal background and upbringing. Describe in a few short paragraphs your family life and hometown. You may wish to include details about your family’s socio-economic status (i.e. social class), particularly as it relates to racial or ethnic identity.

(I’m from Kuwait and belongs to a middle socio economic status)

 

Step Two:  Racial and Ethnic Identity

Describe in one page your recollections about race and ethnicity, particularly your first memories of becoming aware of race and ethnicity. Did it happen in grade school?  Middle School?  High school?  Make sure to include:

  • What did people say about race and ethnicity? Was it openly talked about or was it more hidden?
  • Your own reaction to the issue – where did you locate yourself, in terms of race and ethnicity?

 

Step Three: Analysis

Describe in one page how your personal and direct experiences of race and ethnicity compared with societal views about this subject. Feel free to make use of what you learned in school, your own family background, and other experiences you may have had (popular media, travel to other places, etc.). Make sure to include:

  • What messages were conveyed to you about race and ethnicity? Which ones were positive and which ones were negative? (e.g. could you date someone of another race? What about perceptions of others?)
  • Did all of these messages agree with one another, or were there ambiguities or disagreements? What were some of those?
  • How were your personal experiences of race and ethnicity linked to other aspects of your self-identity (e.g. your gender, your religion, your nationality, etc.)?

 

Format: Papers are to be double-spaced, 1” margins throughout, using 10 or 12 point proportional fonts.
