Existentialism

Existentialism

Existentialism is a concept shared by philosophers in the nineteenth century and twentieth century, although the philosophers had doctrinal differences. The philosophical thinking argued that thinking starts with human subject and not starting with the thinking subject.

Application of existentialism in real life is expressed in the form of music, images and films in expressing the philosophical view; reflecting on the world, the world is complex, where human beings make decisions daily. The choices made by the individuals determine the consequences of the outcomes. The world in this context can be considered to be a path. The paths can lead to happy endings or frustrations. The consequences of the decisions made by individuals are only felt by the person who made the choice. The choice of the individuals contributed to result.

In real life, a driver may choose to drive while sober or drunk, in either way, there are consequences attached. If the driver is drunk, there are high chances of causing an accident or being caught by the traffic law authorities. The same driver can choose to the driver while sober. In either way, it involves day to day making of choices. The consequences will shape the future decision making processes of driver, in the same way as it was argued by Heraclitus and Cratylus on ‘stepping into a river twice’. It is related to ethics, where decision making processes are influential in defining the result.

The choices people make are part of the day to day activities; the options raise awareness on the existence of human beings. Human subject is influenced by feeling, acting and living expressed in existential attitude, confusion and disorientation. Life is made of choices.
