The essay will require the formation of a clear thesis and the presentation of ideas in a traditional essay format with a minimum of five paragraphs to convey an introduction, body, and conclusion for the essay.•The introduction should engage the reader, provide context for the argument (with a brief, 1-2 sentence summary of the story), and present the thesis (your subjective argument about the text that can be supported within the essay with textual evidence–quotations).•The body of the essay will require that students begin each paragraph with a clear, concise topic sentence that offers a supporting point for the thesis that has been conveyed in the introduction paragraph. Each body paragraph must contain support for that claim and incorporate at least one quotation from the text that points to where that support occurs within the story. As a reminder, we are using MLA format for this course, so all quotations must be incorporated with signal phrases attached to them and must be followed with in-text citations, which (for MLA) would include a page number in addition to the author\’s last name (if that author\’s last name hasn\’t already been presented in the signal phrase). You\’ll note that the sample essays after \”Cathedral\” rely on paragraph numbers for in-text citations; please note that I am asking for page numbers, not paragraph numbers. Use MLA format for the formatting details of how to incorporate these. After each quotation has been incorporated fully, students will need to provide analysis, some breakdown or discussion of the quotation. Quotations may not speak for themselves, as your readers may interpret or understand the material different from how you do. You must make your argument and logic transparent through explanation.•The conclusion paragraph may include a summation of where you\’ve been in the essay; however, this should be done in new language so that readers can continue to engage well. Additionally, you might offer an explanation as to how this helps readers understand the work as a whole or how this argument leads to a new understanding of the text or the subject matter. You might comment on the author\’s approach in how he or she conveyed the theme of the work and why that\’s unique or important. Be sure in your conclusion not to overgeneralize or to respond more about the world or people than you do the work itself. Keep it focused on the literature and your analysis. Refrain from reviewing the work, commenting on likes or dislikes.•The title of the work must be original. An ideal title will engage readers with an attention getter and will be followed with something more specific that informs readers about the contents of your essay–a reference to the author or work you\’re analyzing.•A works cited is also required for this task, as it will be for every essay in the course. The work you\’ll include on this document is simply the literary work you\’re discussing. Students should not refer to or include additional resources for this assignment.Students must choose one of the following four topics on which to base their essay, and students must adhere to the following requirements for this task:•Length: 750 words, minimum•Format: MLA format•Research: Only the primary source (the story) must be used•Documentation: The primary source (the story) must be cited as a work from the class\’s required anthology (textbook)The topic information is under topic 2 and this and the story will be in the attachments.
