The goals of this assignment are :
? to develop your knowledge of a violence-related issue currently faced by youth, either in North America or elsewhere
? to give you practice researching youth?related issues using print and internet resources
? to encourage you to include the voices of youth in your analysis of the issue you are researching
? to give you practice preparing a short research report at the College level
The Assignment:
Pick one topic from the following list. You may research another topic that interests you, but you MUST get agreement on your topic from the Marilyn by April 03, 2012.
Research the topic using print and/or internet resources. Because these topics are relatively new in the discourse on youth and violence, you will probably find more useful articles online and in periodicals than in books. Remember that you need to treat online articles in the same way that you treat print articles and books when you reference them in your writing.
Answer the following questions. The answers will form your report. Be sure to present your answers in the order that they are presented here.
1. Summary of the issue. Provide a full one-to-three paragraph summary of the issue as you understand it. (This should include an introduction, body, and conclusion.)
2. Indicators that youth are affected. Describe four possible indicators (combination of physical and behavioural) that youth may be experiencing this form of violence. Cite your sources for this information. In your description of indicators, be sure to make specific reference to some of the indicators of experiencing violence that you have learned about from your text for this course. You may also include information on experiencing trauma that you have learned in other courses this term.
3. Voices of youth. What do youth have to say about how they are affected by this form of violence? Include 3 or 4 quotes from youth who have experienced this kind of violence. Make sure to cite your sources. Your sources may include live interviews ? check with the instructor, however, about ethical and consent issues.
4. What is being done? Describe three social programs or initiatives that address this issue. Comment on whether you think each has the potential to effectively address the issue, or to support youth who experience this form of violence.
5. Incorporating youth in the solution. Are youth actively involved in addressing the problem and creating solutions? If so, how? Describe four different and specific actions that community organizations and society as a whole need to take to truly involve youth in addressing the problem.
