our online Discussion

1. I’d like you to explore one of the squats discussed in your reading or the websites for this week. Can Masdeu is an important example, but you can also discuss Torre David or others found on the ACORN site. Tell us the basic organization for the squat, some of the challenges they faced in maintaining a livable environment, and how and/or why it was terminated.

2. In Anders Corr’s book (from which we read a few chapters this week), he discusses the work of Homes Not Jails and the organization’s counterparts in other cities in the U.S. I think perception is an extremely important aspect of the types of housing and housing issues we discuss this summer. How does government, those with an economic investment in private property, and the media work together to shape public opinion about squatting? In other words, what types of media campaigns do they create and for what purpose? In turn, what do media savvy squatters do to bring attention to their cause, such as the contradictions of having homelessness persist while properties remain vacant?

3. In response to Sarah’s talk in the link

How did Sarah suggest intentional squatters conceptualize land? What did she mean about squatting being a performance act against the right to destroy or leave vacant private property?
