Topics:
1. Demonstrate how Jonathan Edwards exemplifies American culture in one of his writings.
2. Consider John Winthrop, Samuel Sewall, and Jonathan Edwards. Based on their writings, how would each man perceive the other two (be sure to look at their dates of birth and death to get an idea of their timeline)? You will write from the point of view of ONE of these authors, and you will analyze the other authors (based on what they say in their texts). Use their texts to support your analysis.
3. Show how one of any (from the works covered in class) of the seventeenth or eighteenth-century writers covered in class exhibit the literary, cultural, and/or historical characteristics of their age. When writing this paper, narrow your focus to one historical/cultural event, figure, trend, or invention to ensure a focused and succinct thesis instead of a broad and ill-defined one.
4. Write an analysis of Samuel Sewall’s The Selling of Joseph. Focus on his view of slavery, but then look closer at racism and his use of Biblical passages in the text vs. some of his OWN ideas. Finally, discuss any similarities or differences between this and how early explorers viewed “natural rights.” (Keep in mind they were often talking about Native Americans, not African Americans)
